Lewis & Clark has been awarded a $750,000 Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Grant for the interdisciplinary project “Healing Social Suffering Through Narrative,” which will address circumstances such as inequitable access to higher education and physical and mental illness in the Portland area using a liberal arts lens. The project will extend over four years, beginning this fall, engaging students and faculty in a series of community-wide partnerships.

Watzek Library’s Special Collections and Archives has recently added another rare book, an Italian book of hours, to its growing collection of archival materials. The book, valued at more than $45,000, was acquired thanks to a highly competitive grant from the B.H. Breslauer Foundation. Starting next spring, students will have the opportunity to examine the text in depth in Professor Karen Gross’s manuscript analysis course.

The Oregon Community Foundation has awarded the Resonance Ensemble $100,000 to enable them to pursue an ambitious collaboration with the Oregon Symphony and several independent artists to put on the world premiere of Damien Geter’s An African American Requiem. Lewis & Clark’s Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities Katherine FitzGibbon serves as Resonance Ensemble’s Artistic Director.

The new 2018 U.S News & World Report Best Colleges rankings identify Lewis & Clark’s Overseas and Off-Campus Programs as among the best in the nation. The peer rankings also feature Lewis & Clark on the “Best Undergraduate Teaching” list, a select group of 30 liberal arts colleges where the faculty has an unusually strong commitment to undergraduate teaching.

Recruiting and preparing a workforce of K–12 science and math teachers for an increasingly diverse group of students is crucial to improving science education. A new $125,000 National Science Foundation grant to Lewis & Clark will help to fund its STEM Teacher Pathways Project.

A team of three Lewis & Clark students has been awarded a grant from 100 Projects for Peace, an organization committed to supporting student initiatives for conflict resolution. The students will implement a two-month vocational training program in Uganda this summer for the rehabilitation of former child soldiers and young adults affected by war.

Professor of Chemistry Nikolaus Loening was recently awarded a $297,000 research grant by the National Science Foundation to support studies related to the “molecular underpinnings of life.” Loening’s combined grant efforts have aided the college in purchasing a new 600 MHz NMR Spectrometer, built to study a wide range of chemical and biological processes.
