Connecting Students and Alumni
In an effort to build stronger ties between undergraduate students and alumni, Lewis & Clark has jump-started a new iteration of the Student Alumni Association (SAA). The group, which is led by Simone Wren CAS ’10, is composed of 12 SAA Ambassadors. As recipients of the annual Alumni Leadership Scholarship, these students ha ve demonstrated leadership, participated actively in the Lewis & Clark community, and shown an interest in fostering student-alumni relationships.
The SAA has hosted several well-a ttended events this year, including the Networking Brunch: A Savvy Student’s Guide (alumni shared advice and networking tips), Careers for Pioneers (which is held once in the fall for all students and again in the spring for graduating seniors), and the Major Events series (in which alumni panelists discussed ho w they’ve used their majors in their careers).
On A pril 10, the SAA held Spring Into Action! Community Service Day, in collaboration with Lewis & Clark’s Center for Career and Community Engagement. Students, alumni, faculty, staff, and parents from all three schools enga ged in a variety of on- and off-campus service projects to build a stronger sense of community and institutional pride.
Nearly 100 alumni and more than 200 students have benefited from SAA events. Members of the Board of Alumni are also supportive of the group’s efforts. Through the various SAA gatherings, alumni get the chance to meet students but also other local alumni, fostering a stronger Lewis & Clark network.
“SAA tries to give students a head start in appreciating the true value of their education while they’re still in school,” says Tanya Sloan BA ’07, associate director of Alumni and Parent Programs. “Students often become more inspired to see themselves as community members when they realize how deeply the values of lifelong learning, global engagement, and community involvement permeate the lives of those who have gone to Lewis & Clark before them.”

Pioneer Alumni Leadership Award— honors an alumnus/a for demonstrating extraordinary leadership in his or her service to Lewis & Clark.
Outstanding Young Alumnus/a— honors an alumnus/a for rendering superior performance in his or her chosen field or superior service to his or her chosen community within 15 years of graduation.
Distinguished Alumnus/a Award— honors an alumnus/a for rendering superior performance in his or her chosen field or superior service to his or her chosen community.
Donald G. Balmer Citation— Established to honor an alumnus/a, faculty member, staff member, or friend of Lewis & Clark who has demonstrated outstanding voluntary service to the college.
