Native Artist-Scholar in Residence
Anthony Hudson, who performs as Carla Rossi, has joined the campus community as its second Native Artist-Scholar. Hudson, a member of the Grand Ronde/Siletz tribes, is leading a series of creative, provocative, fun, and historically resonant events for students and for faculty, staff, and the public during the 2024–25 academic year.
Overseas Study: A Hot Ticket
Overseas programs have seen strong demand again this year, with 104 students abroad in 13 countries this fall, and an expected 149 students traveling to 7 countries in the spring.

In September, a group of L&C students got an exclusive tour of Nike headquarters, connecting with alumni and discovering what it’s like to work at one of the world’s leading sportswear brands. The Career Trek was organized by L&C’s Career Center, with the help of Nike employee Jonel Iliscupidez BA ’16.
Geen Innovation in China and the United States
Can China’s progress in the renewable energy sector facilitate the global transition to renewables? This was just one of the many questions explored by attendees of the 27th annual Environmental Studies Symposium, ENVX, on the topic of Green Innovation in China and the U.S.: Creating Climate Solutions. The symposium included keynotes and a panel discussion on electric vehicles. This year’s student cochairs were Morgaine McGrath BA ’25 and Kaia Hirsch BA ’26.
Guided by Peace, Reconciliation, and Justice
This fall, Lewis & Clark is offering Palestine and Israel: Contexts, Convictions, and Commitments, a one-credit short course. It invites students to participate in a series of Community Dialogues, teach-ins, and discussion sections that offer opportunities for trust building and collaborative study. The course is grounded in an ethic of peace, reconciliation, and justice.
Federal Grants Galore!
Professor of Biology Greg Hermann: $414,000 from the National Institutes of Health for investigating the role of lipid metabolism in the biogenesis of lysosome-related organelles.
Associate Professor of Biology Margaret Metz: $47,000 from the National Science Foundation for a multi-institution study on forests affected by interacting components of global change that can lead to shifts in landscape competition.
Assistant Professor of Physics Ben Olsen: $249,684 from the National Science Foundation for lab equipment needed to use the dilute gas of atoms as a quantum simulator for various models of quantum magnetism.

The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge empowers colleges and universities to achieve excellence in nonpartisan student democratic engagement. ALL IN has awarded L&C a Platinum Seal for excellence in nonpartisan student voter engagement and campus turnout inthe 2022 midterm elections and a Highly Established Action Plan award for our work to engage college voters in fall 2024.
