Metropolitan Public Defender
Portland, OR

October 25, 2024

Coming into law school, I knew that I wanted to do some kind of criminal law, but I wasn’t sure exactly what. I knew that the criminal justice system was incredibly flawed and biased, but I did not know of concrete ways in which to fight this injustice. This is what pushed me to intern at the Metropolitan Public Defender’s Office (MPD).

This past summer cemented my passion for public defense. I drafted motions to suppress, assisted attorneys in voir dire selection, and was able to attend multiple trials. I was in awe at how creative and zealous MPD’s attorneys are, and the fact that they fought tooth and nail for our clients. It was inspiring to see the concrete actions that could be taken to fight against the powers-that-be.

Through my time at MPD, I gained an invaluable wealth of experience. The breadth of cases ensured that I was able to research numerous topics and learn more about Oregon criminal law. The kind attorneys went out of their way to provide feedback and tips on writing motions. Perhaps best of all, I was able to connect with other people who share my passion for defense and helping those who need it most.

Given that this internship was only partially funded, the PILP stipend was key in allowing me to pursue this position without having to worry about finances. I am incredibly grateful to PILP and its’ donors for making this all possible!
