Summer Recap for Returning Students
Welcome Back! We hope you had a nice summer and are as excited as we are to begin the fall semester! While you’ve been away, we wanted to make you aware of a few changes that have taken place regarding information technology.
- New equipment available for loan at the IT Service Desk. In addition to all the gear we currently have available for student use, such as calculators, Chromebooks, digital cameras, speakers, projectors, etc., we have upgraded to the GoPro Hero 12 and added some large 4TB portable solid-state hard drives to our inventory. Here is a fun video that provides a glimpse into the gear available for checkout at the IT Service Desk on the first floor of Watzek Library.
- Printing in the Resource Lab. The Resource Lab is a computer lab open to anyone in the Lewis & Clark community. It is located on the first floor of Watzek Library. To better serve our students, L&C students are now allocated $20.00 worth of printing per semester. Please note that any unused amount will not be carried over to the next semester. You can send your print requests to rlab@lclark.edu. Visit their webpage to learn more about the Resource Lab and its services.
- Anti-Spoofing Measure in Gmail. Spoofing, the act of disguising an email from an unknown source as being from a known, trusted source, is increasingly on the rise. To help guard against this, we have enabled advanced security settings in Google to display in-message warning banners for messages that may be spoofing a sender from Lewis & Clark College. As a result, you may come across a warning banner titled “Be careful with this message” when it suspects an email is spoofing a sender from Lewis & Clark College. Please refer to this page for more information regarding what to do if you see this banner.
- Zoom’s New Minimum Requirement is Version 6.1.6. This update ensures a uniform experience utilizing the latest features, security patches, and bug fixes. Instructions for installing the latest version of Zoom can be found here. If you are in a position or role requiring a Zoom Pro license, please get in touch with the IT Service Desk at itservice@lclark.edu, and we’ll be happy to set you up. Also, you can now log into Zoom using your standard L&C credentials!
- Antivirus Protection. We no longer offer Symantec as an institution, but it’s still essential for your computer system to remain protected from potential viruses. While Windows 10 & 11 and MacOS have built-in security features, all operating systems are vulnerable to various cyber threats, making antivirus protection an essential layer of defense. If you are running Windows, make sure that Windows Defender is enabled. For Macs, we suggest using either Avast or AVG
As always, the Information Technology Department is here to make your interactions with campus technology as easy and seamless as possible. If you ever run into an issue with the tech you use, please contact the IT Service Desk at itservice@lclark.edu, and we’ll do our best to assist you or point you in the right direction.
