Lewis & Clark Remembers Former Counseling Director

Don Nickerson was a lifelong “searcher,” who saw heart and consciousness as always growing and evolving.

Don Nickerson, who headed counseling at Lewis & Clark from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s, died April 13, 2023, at age 96. Nickerson was a lifelong “searcher,” who saw heart and consciousness as always growing and evolving. He studied at Cincinnati Bible College, Stanford University, and Andover Newton Seminary.

After earning a counseling degree, he moved from California to Oregon to serve as director of counseling and director of student development at Lewis & Clark from 1965 to 1975. At L&C, he created new programs to train student counselors and developed a group program for both faculty and students. From there, he moved into private practice while continuing to teach gestalt therapy in the graduate counseling program for 20 years.

Nickerson enjoyed playing tennis, writing poetry, partaking of good food and wine, and traveling the world. He leaves behind his wife of 41 years, Linda Larsen.
