Dear L&C Community,
We did it! We reached, and exceeded, our $155 million fundraising goal in the most ambitious fundraising campaign in Lewis & Clark’s history. And, we did it one full year earlier than anticipated.
I never doubted we could achieve our target. When Lewis & Clark faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, partners, and supporters put our minds to it, no goal is too great. Each and every gift is a vote of confidence in our institution’s future. Thank you to all of our wonderful donors, our stellar Board of Trustees, and our terrific campaign cochairs Heidi Hu BS ’85, Brent Hutchings BA ’84, and Pat Mahaffy BA ’85, as well as our top-notch Advancement staff who worked tirelessly to make this achievement possible.
Because of this support, Lewis & Clark is better positioned than ever to serve our students and to have a positive impact on our communities, locally, regionally, nationally, and globally.
Renovations and updates to buildings and grounds, either completed or underway, will ensure generations of students will have an enriching and exceptional educational experience. The remodeled Fowler Student Center, along with renovated residence halls Stewart and Odell, has created a true heart of campus. This area is abuzz with activity. Updates to Huston Sports Complex have begun. The Bergman Courtroom at Lewis & Clark Law School is now open, enhancing the real-world skills building we provide our law students.
Funds raised are supporting scholarships to increase access to a Lewis & Clark education and supporting the growth of programs, such as the Bates Center for Entrepreneurship and Leadership, that offer students, no matter what their major, transformational leadership and entrepreneurial opportunities. The Graduate School of Education and Counseling has been able to significantly expand its Portland-based Community Counseling Center in order to serve more clients in need and expand the school’s successful art therapy program. Support from the campaign has made it possible for the law school to open the Advocacy Center, building on the school’s robust experiential learning offerings.
These are just a few examples of what the campaign has already made possible. You’ll read about others in the pages that follow.
Now is the time to build on this incredible momentum.
This academic year, we will look to reimagine and update Lewis & Clark’s mission statement to better reflect our strengths and impact. We will launch a strategic planning process to determine areas of focus. We will invest in the programs that make us truly distinctive as a leading institution of higher education.
I hope you are inspired by the stories in this issue. They tell a tale of an institution on the rise. If you are already actively engaged with Lewis & Clark, I want to thank you. I invite you to deepen that engagement. If you have been waiting for the right moment to become involved, now is that time. Attend an event in your area. Become a volunteer. Create an internship opportunity. Mentor a student who could benefit from your knowledge and experience.
I am so pleased to be leading Lewis & Clark at this moment of great success and great promise. Our future has never been brighter.
Sincerely,
Robin Holmes-Sullivan, PhD
President
