Mary Maletis died March 5, 2022, at age 95. She served as a trustee of the college from 1972 to 1981, after which time she became a life trustee.
Maletis was one of three daughters of the late James and Panagoula Maletis. In 1917, her father cofounded the Maletis Brothers Grocery Store in Portland’s Old Town with his brother and cousin. The store remained in operation for 66 years and was a vital fixture in Old Town. As a young girl, Maletis worked in the store along with her cousins; she eventually took over over the business in 1970.
A former Laurelhurst kindergarten teacher, she was also one of the first women realtors in Portland. Maletis was instrumental in the revitalization of Old Town, where her family owned several buildings in addition to the grocery, which was sold in 1988. An art collector with a gallery in her home, she was a prominent member of Portland’s Greek community and the Greek Orthodox Church.
The Mary Maletis Scholarship Fund at Lewis & Clark was established in 1979.
