Treewalk Dedication
Open gallery
On May 7, the College dedicated the Professor Evan T. Williams Memorial Tree Walk in honor of Williams, professor of chemistry and founder and chair of the Environmental Studies Program. The Tree Walk consists of 20 species of trees, including native trees that Meriwether Lewis and William Clark encountered on their journey west. With Williams’ death in May 2004, the class of 2004, led by Clara Elias ’04, dedicated its senior gift to the tree walk. This year, building on the work of students before them, Anna Henry ’05, Ashley McElheny ’05, and Chris Ragsdale ’05 completed educational materials to accompany the Tree Walk.
Evan Williams’ granddaughters, Louise, Lily, Celeste, and Claire, assist with the ceremonial planting of an incense cedar east of Frank Manor House. The tree memorializes Williams’ annual practice of gathering faculty and students to watch the sun rise directly over Mount Hood.
