Art in Public Places Policy

"Outerspace" art project on display in the Fir Acres gardens

Purpose

The purpose of the Art Exhibit Policy is to provide a framework for the display of artwork by students enrolled for credit in Lewis & Clark College art classes, faculty and staff of the College, individual students, alumni, and invited artists.

Guidelines
  • Art work created by students currently enrolled for credit in one or more art classes at Lewis & Clark College may be submitted for display.
  • The artist must submit an online proposal. Exhibits will be coordinated in consultation with designated representatives as appropriate (e.g. Facility Services, representatives from the three campuses, departments). Proposal form
  • Art work by Lewis & Clark College faculty, staff, students, alumni, and artists not enrolled in an art class will be considered for exhibit on a case-by-case basis (e.g. annual symposia which include art exhibits of both student and professional work).
  • Requests for exhibits of students’ class work will take precedence over other requests.
  • Faculty, staff, individual students or alumni requesting an exhibit of their art work must submit photos of the work to be exhibited, or other acceptable visual or written representation, with the exhibit request.
  • Exhibits will be on display for a period of time to be determined in consultation with the artist, sponsoring department or program, and building and/or Facility Services representatives.
  • Wall installations and/or installations on campus grounds, when approved, will be coordinated with Facilities Services staff in consultation with individual building representatives as necessary.
  • No works of art may be removed during the agreed-upon exhibit period.
  • Labels will be provided by the individual artist requesting the exhibit. Labels will conform to a style provided by the director, Hoffman Gallery of Contemporary Art.
  • Exhibits may contain items that are for sale. Sale prices will not be displayed, but the name and e-mail address of the artist will be provided to interested parties.
Art Exhibition Policies in Specific Buildings/Campuses

Where existing building/campus art exhibition policies are in force (e.g. Watzek Library, residence halls, Graduate School of Education and Counseling), the existing policy will supersede this policy.

Requests for Art Wall Installations

Requests for art wall installations in venues other than within Fields Center for the Visual Arts and the Hoffman Gallery of Contemporary Art must be routed through the Office of Campus Events before Facility Services will process the service request.

Security

Lewis & Clark College will not be responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged materials. Persons whose work is to be exhibited must sign a liability waiver.
