Where Are They Now?

Zuigaku Kodachi, professor emeritus of Japanese, was awarded the Japan Foreign Minister’s Award in July 2003. Kodachi has been associated with Lewis & Clark College for more than 40 years. He founded the College’s Japanese language program and taught in that program from 1963 to his retirement in 1998. He also introduced Japanese language programs to Willamette University, Linfield College, Portland Community College, the YMCA, and the Portland Art Museum. “The award was a great, great honor,” Kodachi says. “I was so surprised.” 

Edgar Reynolds, professor emeritus of theatre, writes: “Direct Shakespeare in Vietnam? In Vietnamese? It was a remote and absurd idea. I had to do it.” Reynolds directedTwelfth Night with 16 students from the College of Stage and Film in Ho Chi Minh City for seven weeks in the fall of 2002. He was the first American to direct at the professional school for theatre and film artists, and his production opened the college’s new 300-seat theatre. “When the first laughter came, the actors took heart and gave strong performances,” Reynolds says. “It was a great adventure.”
