For seven years running, Lewis & Clark has been named one of the top producers of Fulbright Award winners in the country, according to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. “Lewis & Clark has a long tradition of international education and exchange, and our success with Fulbright awards is due, in large part, to the commitment of our wonderful students and faculty,” says Bruce Suttmeier, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and associate professor of Japanese. “Fulbright provides an opportunity to engage across vast global differences, and our L&C community recognizes the vital importance of such engagement in understanding the world in all its complexity and diversity.”
In academic year 2023–24, four students from Lewis & Clark were selected for Fulbright awards: Grace Bird BA ’23 (Bulgaria), Caroline Gray BA ’17 (Kenya), Michael Mulrennan BA ’22 (Andorra), and Lucia Sheridan BA ’23 (Germany). View their profiles.
Lewis & Clark applicants to Fulbright are supported by Therese Augst, associate professor of German studies and the college’s Fulbright program advisor.
“Our students are passionate about global issues and seek opportunities to engage with the world, whether through study abroad, independent research, or teaching. This is why I love my role as Fulbright program advisor!” says Augst. “Our applicants genuinely grasp the organization’s mission and bring the qualifications that Fulbright is looking for, and our intensive faculty support during the review process helps applicants with every aspect of the application process. I’m fiercely proud of all of our applicants.”
The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international academic exchange program. Since 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 400,000 talented and accomplished students, scholars, teachers, artists, and professionals of all backgrounds with the opportunity to study, teach, and conduct research abroad.
