Welcome Letter - Law
On behalf of the Student Health Center, welcome to Lewis & Clark Law School!
The focus of this letter is on explaining four health requirements that students entering Lewis & Clark must attend to. Please note that law students enrolled in the distance learning LLM program are not subject to these requirements. Specifically, those students are not required to have health insurance and may not enroll in student health insurance.
We want to promote your health as a student, along with the health of our community. In accord with this, we have four health considerations that must be addressed soon. Please complete the following:
“Full-time” is defined as:
- Day Division students enrolled in at least 13 credits;
- Evening Division students enrolled in at least 8 credits; or
- Summer session students enrolled in at least three credits.
Please note that you must set up your Lewis & Clark email account and then wait at least 24 hours before you can set up your portal account. To set up your account, follow this link http://lclark.medicatconnect.com and click “Register” in the upper right hand corner. The portal is a secure platform that will allow you to enter immunization and other health information described below. If you have any difficulties setting up your portal account, please check out this helpsheet.
Required of each student:
- M.M.R. (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) immunization. Two doses are required at least 28 days apart and after 12 months of age. Alternatively, an MMR lab (Titer) report indicating immunity satisfies the measles requirement. Please enter your two MMR immunization dates in the Health Portal. Click on Immunizations in the left column to enter your dates (you may also enter your other immunization dates, but they are not required). For additional information, see Oregon law 333-050-0130.
- Complete a tuberculosis screening questionnaire on the Health Portal. If one of the following criteria is met during your screening questionnaire, you will need to receive a TB test: you were born in a country with a high incidence of tuberculosis disease (“TB”), or in the last five years, you lived in, traveled to, or emigrated from a country with a high incidence of tuberculosis disease. For a list of countries with high incidences of tuberculosis disease, click here. No matter your country of birth or recent travel history , complete the TB Screening Questionnaire on Medicat by clicking on the Forms button in the left column and selecting TB Screening Questionnaire under Required Health Forms for New LC Students. If your answers indicate you were born in a country or recently visited a country with a high incidence of tuberculosis, you will need to receive a TB test (e.g. Mantoux tuberculin skin test, Interferon Gamma Release Assay, chest x-ray) and submit the results under Immunizations.
Note: In accordance with Oregon law, Lewis & Clark College requires all full-time students to have two doses of MMR (measles, mumps, and Rubella) vaccine administered at least 28 days apart and after the student is 12 months of age. Students who do not meet the Oregon law requirements may experience registration holds or cancellations.
You may need to collect medical information from your family or healthcare provider in order to complete these forms.
All law students attending classes in the Fall or Spring semesters must have the school-sponsored health insurance plan or health insurance that is comparable to the school-sponsored health insurance plan (please confirm directly with your insurance company whether it meets the criteria and covers providers and required services in the Portland metro area). All actively enrolled law students are automatically enrolled in and charged for the school-sponsored health insurance plan, with summer coverage included with the spring coverage.
Lewis & Clark has partnered with PacificSource to offer a health insurance plan for students that contains robust benefits that support the health of college students. The plan provides excellent value as well as access to a wide network of providers both in Portland and across the nation. The plan may provide a better value for you than health insurance offered through a parent’s or partner’s employer. We encourage you to review our school-sponsored insurance plan and see if it meets your needs. Please note: Medicaid plans from states other than Oregon and Washington generally do not meet the comparability requirements.
If you do not want to be enrolled in and charged for the school-sponsored health insurance plan, you must complete the online waiver.
- For students starting coursework in the fall, the waiver form can be accessed from the declining insurance coverage website beginning in mid-July, and the form must be completed by the deadline given.
- Students starting coursework in the spring will be sent a link to the online waiver.
Students have only one opportunity each academic year to waive enrollment in the school-sponsored health insurance plan. The waiver must be submitted at the start of each academic year.
If you have questions about student health insurance, please see our student health insurance website or email stuhealthinsurance@lclark.edu or call 503-768-8235.
Oregon state law requires us to provide ALL students with information on vaccine-preventable diseases known to occur in individuals between 16 and 21 years of age. We encourage you to read that information at this webpage, and then talk with your health care provider about what additional vaccines might be appropriate. See also the American College Health Association (ACHA) recommendations for immunizations for college students.
We look forward to partnering with you in support of your health and wellness. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at 503-768-7165 or health@lclark.edu.
