Continuation of Coverage

Enrollment in the student health insurance plan is generally restricted to enrolled students.  However, there are some exceptions to this rule— the most notable one being that students who have attended the first 10 days of classes and who have paid their health insurance premium will remain enrolled in the student health insurance plan through the end of the policy period associated with the semester of their enrollment (see point #2 below).

The information below addresses how, under certain circumstances, undergraduate and law students may continue their student health insurance coverage after withdrawing or graduating.  This information does not apply to graduate (GSEC) students.  Graduate students should click here to learn about their continuation coverage options.

Are you leaving Lewis & Clark while enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan?

1.  For students who have started the semester but are leaving school before actively attending the first 10 days of classes for the semester:

If this category applies to you and you are leaving the college for medical reasons, you can petition the College to keep you on the student health insurance plan for that semester.  Please contact stuhealthinsurance@lclark.edu for a petition form and instructions.

If this category applies to you and you are leaving for any other, non-medical reason, you are not eligible to stay enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan.  The College will refund any premium you have previously paid for the semester.

2.  For students leaving school after attending the first 10 days of classes:

If you leave Lewis & Clark after completing the first 10 days of classes, you will continue to be covered by the Student Health Insurance Plan through December 31 for Fall Semester and August 14 for Spring/Summer (assuming the semester premium was paid).

3.  For students withdrawing from the college during the fall semester for medical reasons:

Students enrolled with the Student Health Insurance Plan during the fall who anticipate missing the spring semester due to medical issues may petition to be covered by the student health insurance plan for the spring semester.  Please contact stuhealthinsurance@lclark.edu for a petition form and instructions.

4.  For students who are graduating:

Insurance coverage for graduates continues through the effective dates for each semester.  If you graduate in December, your coverage continues until December 31. For May graduates, coverage continues until August 14.  No coverage is available beyond these dates.

5.  Insurance options for students who are no longer able to enroll in student health insurance:

For Oregon residents trying to find insurance coverage, the OregonHealthcare.gov website is a good place to start.  Help in navigating the health insurance Marketplace in Oregon can be found here.

Residents of other states should check with your state or www.healthcare.gov for additional information.  You can also check to see if you qualify for a subsidy at https://www.healthcare.gov/screener/.
