Davis Scholarships
Davis Foundation scholarships are one of the most prestigious awards for Lewis & Clark students. We are thrilled to welcome Davis Scholars to our institution, and we are committed to supporting you during your time as a Lewis & Clark student.
An important part of that commitment is clarity around what is covered by your award—and what isn’t. We do not want unexpected expenses to create stress for you!
A Shared Partnership Philosophy
The Davis Scholar program at Lewis & Clark has a shared partnership philosophy: participants have a role to play in the success of the award. This means that Davis students and their families, Lewis & Clark, and the Davis Foundation all contribute to financing the cost of attending Lewis & Clark.
Davis Foundation Partnership in Action
Here’s how the Davis Foundation shares responsibility to support your success in their award partnerships:
- Davis Foundation: provides need-based funding for UWC students attending Lewis & Clark
- Lewis & Clark: provides additional grant aid needed to meet a student’s demonstrated financial need
- Student: works through the Lewis & Clark Work-Study program to help cover educational costs (including books, personal expenses) at L&C
- Family: provides financial support to the extent indicated through the financial aid process
To meet the demonstrated financial need, the following aid sources are awarded in this order:
- Davis Scholarship
- Lewis & Clark Work-Study (first-year students are awarded a reduced amount of work-study)
- L&C/UWC Grant
Timeline
By July 1: Work with ISS to arrange your transportation if you want L&C to facilitate your airfare purchase.
By August 1: Have a plan for how you are going to get to campus and how you are going to purchase your books for the fall semester.
By August 20: Review open student employment positions and apply for several jobs.
FAQ
Depending on your demonstrated financial need, your award may cover many, but not all, of your expenses.
Your award may include funding to cover:
- Tuition and/or L&C overseas program cost
- Regular room charge
- 14-flex meal plan
- L&C student health insurance (for international UWC students)
- Standard airfare allowance or actual cost (if higher) of least expensive ticket (one round-trip ticket per semester)
- Books ($400/semester) and modest personal expenses ($150/mo)
Your award does not cover:
-
- Optional fees (green energy, media, course fees for music, PE, etc.)
- SEVIS fees, visa fees
- Higher cost room or board plans
- Dorm fines, library fines
- Costs during breaks or between semesters
We cover the minimum/lowest cost of one round-trip ticket per academic year. We also cover airfare related to Lewis & Clark overseas programs. You will arrange your airfare with International Student Services.
If your family contribution is less than $3,000, we will front-load some L&C/UWC Grant funding into the fall semester to help create a student account refund that can be used to help purchase books in the fall semester. This will result in a higher balance due in the spring semester, which may require students to save some of their fall semester work-study earnings to pay off the spring semester charges.
Our commitment remains to meet the full demonstrated need for Davis Scholars for up to 4 years (8 semesters of enrollment). Students are required to apply for financial aid every year. Davis UWC Scholars who are eligible for federal student aid are required to file the FAFSA, others reapply for financial aid by completing a short form to update us about any changes in their family’s situation.
In subsequent years, UWC Davis Scholars will see a few changes in their aid award.
- If there are changes in the information in the reapplication process for aid, students may see a change in the family contribution that either increases or decreases the family’s expected contribution.
- The Work-Study award will increase from the first-year student amount ($2,500) to the regular amount—usually $3,500 per year. Regular work awards are still less than 10 hours a week of work.
- The front-loading of a student’s aid to help with buying books happens only in the first year and will not be adjusted in subsequent years.
