¡Buenas! My name is Marta, and I am from Andalucía, a warm and sunny region in southern Spain. Just two years ago, I was lucky to be accepted in the United World College of South East Asia in Singapore, joining the UWC mission and consequently changing my life habits, switching the language I speak and definitely, transforming my perspective on global issues.
Being a student in UWCSEA, I had the great opportunity to meet people from diverse backgrounds and nationalities, which made me reconsider my pre established notions and inevitably enrich my world views. Moreover, this experience made me realize the power each individual holds to transform the world through their own educational journeys. That convinced me to prioritize a strong community in the institutions I belong to, as well as the diversity that provides various perspectives both in the classroom and outside of school hours.
That is precisely why I chose to apply to Lewis & Clark. The support towards international students, as well as the diversity of the student body makes L&C a great fit for me and my future personal and professional choices. Moreover, those characteristics make L&C an ideal environment to pursue International Affairs and Global Languages, two areas I am particularly drawn to.
Furthermore, I really enjoy art in all forms. I am a pianist, and I love performing and involving myself in music events to meet new people and make my abilities grow. The artsy environment in the community will definitely encourage me to contribute to the numerous university and local events, which greatly motivates me.
Both my European background and my years in South East Asia impacted my world views, and I believe living in America will pose a similar influence. Even though I will always remember Singapore and everything I learnt and lived there, I am sure there will be endless opportunities and experiences to live in Portland. And I cannot wait to meet everyone, explore the city and be part of the Lewis and Clark community!
