My name is Sophia Korsmo and I attended UWC Atlantic in Wales. Joining the UWC community has benefited my life in an infinite number of ways. UWC changed my life not only through the increased level of education I experienced but primarily through the relationships I made there (which I’m sure numerous others can resonate with me on this). Some of the experiences I enjoyed the most at UWC AC were the impromptu get-togethers and the random adventures people would end up joining. Through these adventures, I was able to better myself through questioning my previous view of the world and engaging in fruitful conversations with some of my newfound closest friends. And through these conversations, I decided to apply to Lewis and Clark as the school seemed to be able to provide the space for people to continue these deep conversations as well as provide a conducive learning environment to further my development and understanding of the complexities of the world.
Before I went to UWC I went to a public school in Bellingham, Washington so I’m already quite familiar with the Pacific Northwest (PNW) vibe, but I will be almost completely new to Portland, so I guess I’m sort of coming back home. The proximity to my home in the US was also another reason why I consider L&C as well as the larger UWC community the school seems to harbor. I am planning on majoring in sociology, and as I received a vocal scholarship I will be spending quite a bit of my time working with music. My academic interest primarily resides in humanities and political sciences (with a focus on feminist, queer, and reproductive studies).
I love to sing and music has been one of my main hobbies for a long time now, but besides that, I’m also really interested in any adventurous outdoor activities, and I know the Portland area has no shortage of outdoor activities, and I’d love to meet up with any of you and go on any adventures that may pop up. Including those, I have an intense love for traveling, as I have been doing a lot with family and friends for as long as I can remember. Some places I have gone to are Bolivia, Austria (I have family in both those countries), Canada, the UK, UAE, South Africa, Germany, Poland, Netherlands, and several other western European countries.
At L&C I hope to further my education around humanities and find the field of study within sociology that I will delve into (as of now I’m looking at sociology in its most general sense). I also hope that L&C becomes my home away from home and helps me further find myself and better my understanding of my future endeavors.
