Lyell Asher joined the department in 1994 and received his PhD from the University of Virginia in 1990.  Here at Lewis & Clark, he offers courses in Shakespeare’s Early Works, Later Works; Ideas of the Renaissance and Modernity; Renaissance Literature; The Art of the Novel; Major Periods and Issues; Montaigne and the Life of the Essay; The Novel and Moral Reflection.

His critical essays and opinion pieces have appeared in Christianity and Literature, The Yale Journal of Criticism, The Journal of the American Academy of Religion (AAR), Publication of the Modern Language Association (PMLA), Clio, English Literary History (ELH), Hamlet Studies, The Wall Street Journal, The American Scholar, Quillette, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and Canada’s National Post. His podcast appearances include the American Party podcast and NPR’s “Watching America,” among others.
