Get Ready for the Great Oregon ShakeOut on Oct. 17
On October 17, at 10:17 a.m., a message will be sent to the Lewis & Clark community for the Great Oregon Shakeout earthquake drill and test of the LC Alerts system. Be sure your cell phone number is updated with our emergency alert system.
Lewis & Clark will be participating in the Great Oregon Shakeout on October 17, a day of earthquake preparedness observed by nations across the world.
Please take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with earthquakes and how to be prepared.
Focus on the basics, like what to do when you feel shaking and what important items to keep in your room or car.
BEFORE THE EARTHQUAKE
Be sure your cell phone is registered with the Lewis & Clark emergency alert system:
Students
- Log into webadvisor https://webadvisor.lclark.edu/
- Select the “students” tab from the main menu.
- In the “User Account” section in the upper left, click on the first link - “User Profile (Self Service).”
- Review all of your contact information. Please verify, update, or add your mobile phone number and personal email address.
- Students: if you need to update your address or other contact information, please navigate to the relevant page below:
Faculty & Staff
- Log into Workday - https://wd5.myworkday.com/lewisandclark/
- Select “Personal Information” from the main menu.
- In the “Change” column on the left, click on the top button, “Contact Information.”
- Review all of your contact information.
- Click on the oval “edit” button on the top of the screen to change, update, or add information. Please be sure that your mobile phone number is accurate. Add your personal email address as an “additional email” if you wish to receive Lewis & Clark College emergency notifications from your personal email address

DURING THE EARTHQUAKE
- Listen to official communications on what to do. You will be notified by Lewis & Clark and city and state officials via SMS text messages.
- Focus on keeping yourself safe. Your safety is your number one priority.
- Call or text 911 if you are in need of assistance, but understand there will be delays until emergency personnel are able to assist you.
- Remember… …when you feel shaking or receive an earthquake warning - DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON!
- If able, keep important persons (your parents, family, and friends) updated about your location and support needed. Please know that cell phone reception may be limited.
WHAT TO EXPECT ON OCTOBER 17, 2024
Lewis & Clark will test the campus emergency alert system. A test message will be sent on October 17, 2024 at 10:17 a.m.. You will receive the following message via text message and email.
- Urgent LC Alert: This is a test of the Lewis & Clark emergency alert system. *** TEST MESSAGE ***
- If you do not receive a text message from Lewis & Clark, please verify that your cell phone is correctly added to the system using the previously stated instructions.

Everyone is encouraged to practice DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON for 30 seconds.
- Drop where you are, onto your hands and knees.

Cover your head and neck with one arm and hand.
- Then crawl underneath the table or desk for additional shelter.

Stay on your knees and bend forward to protect vital organs.
- Hold On to your shelter with one hand. Keep covering your head/neck with your other hand.
Thinking about emergencies and disasters can be scary. Preparing ahead of time is your best option in staying safe during an emergency or disaster, especially during an earthquake.
Remember to sign up for emergency alerts, have emergency supplies available, and be ready to act when you feel shaking.
