New Certificate in Litigation & Advocacy Skills Now Available at L&C

Lewis & Clark Law School launched a new Certificate in Litigation & Advocacy Skills in 2024, giving law students a way to demonstrate their academic focus and expertise to prospective employers. The Certificate offers a comprehensive curriculum that combines rigorous coursework, practical experience, and mentorship opportunities. Students must take four required courses, have a minimum of six credits in practical skills from clinics, externships, moot courts, and selected practicums, and participate in a mentorship program that includes attending court proceedings and networking events with a mentor in the community.

This program is tailored for students who aspire to become proficient advocates in various legal settings, from courtrooms to negotiation tables.

Key highlights of the program include:

• Diverse Course Offerings: Students will have the opportunity to choose from a range of courses that cover essential areas such as Advanced Civil Procedure, Appellate Advocacy, Complex Litigation, and more. These courses are designed to provide a robust foundation in litigation and advocacy techniques.
• Practical Experience: To ensure that students gain hands-on experience, the certificate requires the completion of practice-based credits through clinics, externships, and participation in moot court or mock trial teams. These practical experiences are vital for developing real-world advocacy skills.
• Mentorship Program: A unique feature of this certificate is the year-long mentorship program. Students will be paired with experienced mentors from the legal community, providing them with valuable guidance and the opportunity to observe live legal proceedings. This mentorship is an integral part of the learning process, offering insights and networking opportunities within the legal community.
• Recognition of Achievement: Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a certificate acknowledging their specialized training in litigation and advocacy. Those who excel academically will have the opportunity to graduate with distinction.
