The intent of this program is to support Energy Trust SEM participants and local area students by expanding access to the SEM internship program and incentive. The internship program successfully supports SEM organizations in achieving their energy goals by extending staffing capacity while training students to be the energy workforce of the future.

This program alleviates some of the barriers to participation by facilitating the recruitment and training of student interns for the host institution. 


 Benefit to employers:

  • Facilitating connections and assisting with outreach between potential student interns and employers
  • Training and mentoring of interns in advance of placement
  • Student interns supported by ongoing mentorship and peer cohort engagement
  • Access to intern incentive to the host participant, up to $10,000 per engagement year
  • Potential for long term hire of interns

Employers must: 

  • Be a current SEM participant 
  • Review applications materials and hire the students
  • Determine the internship location, schedule, pay rate
  • Complete and return SEM intern paperwork upon hiring, and internship completion paperwork
  • Provide a direct supervisor for the intern
  • Provide interns with access to energy data, equipment, policies and procedures, as needed
  • Participate in training, workshops, meetings, as needed

Example student interns projects, tasks:

  • Support SEM administrative tasks such as filling out paperwork, tracking milestones, scheduling meetings
  • Assist or lead energy audits or inspections
  • Track and report energy data, projects
  • Support policy and program development
  •  Assist in behavior change or occupant engagement programs, events
  • Assist in tracking regulatory changes, programs
